Flash Fiction Summer 2021 Writing Contest

The Flash Fiction Summer 2021 Writing Contest was a challenge to write an engaging short story (300 words or less), about an image. The image, below, is of a woman sitting atop a hill or mountain, wrapped in a blanket, at what appears to be either dusk or dawn.

This is the first writing contest I had ever entered. There were approximately 250 entries. I was so surprised to win first place!

Winning this contest gave me the confidence to start writing more, and to continue writing my blog. I talk about this in more detail in my article Try Something New – You May Surprise Yourself. I have since entered a few more contests and I am really enjoying the writing process!

Finally, after dozens of shots, he got it! I know I spend way too much time thinking about every little detail, but it all has to be perfect. First, the sun wasn’t right. Then the wind picked up and my hair was all over the place. I didn’t think he’d ever get a good one.

The colors are nice.  It only took three outfit changes, but I think the orange pants and aqua blanket pop just enough that I’m still the focus. I make the sky look good without having it overshadow me.  This ‘wispy breeze as the sun rises’ look is just what I was going for.

I know that selfies are the thing, but I have so many of those on my feed already. This pic makes me look more serious and introspective. Even though all I can thinking about his how fucking cold it is and how much I want my coffee.

“Honey, I’m heading back to the car. I’m freezing!” 

I feel bad leaving him to pack up the camera, my clothes and makeup bag, but he’s the one who offered to help.

Getting up early and hiking my ass up here was a bitch, but sometimes you’ve got to suck things up for your craft.  If I want to be an Influencer than these are the sacrifices I must make.  I wonder how many likes I’ll get.
