Toasted Owl Café – It’s Worth a Hoot

Driving to the Grand Canyon, Albuquerque, or Las Vegas along Rt 40? Or passing through Flagstaff, Arizona for any reason? Include a stop at the Toasted Owl Café – It’s worth a hoot!

We first discovered the Toasted Owl a few years ago when we were camping in Flagstaff. We arrived in ‘Flag’ with our travel trailer for a long weekend that included the Flagstaff Blues and Brews Festival. Wanting to get a good meal before an afternoon of music and beer, we headed into downtown.

Great Menu, and Dog Friendly

The Toasted Owl Café downtown location is located in a charming old house and has a large, dog-friendly patio. The menu includes vegan and vegetarian options along with $3 mimosas. Dog friendly, vegan/vegetarian, and cheap drinks? Sold!

There are many great dishes to choose from on the menu, but the Breakfast Tamales caught my eye that very first visit. Two vegetarian tamales, topped with a fabulous green chili sauce, served with black beans and greens. Seriously, I have ordered this again just to get another taste of the sauce, it’s that good! I’ve tried some other things over the years too, with the Build-A-Breakfast Burrito being another favorite of mine. This can be ordered with ‘real’ meat, or veggie sausage or chorizo and the burrito is huge!

If you like spicy, the Owlapeno Scramble is one of my husband’s favorites. Cream cheese jalapeno poppers, pickled jalapenos, scrambled cheesy eggs and spicy green chili sauce, served with potatoes and a tortilla. This too is a large portion and can easily serve two. Honestly, everything on the menu sounds good, and they’ve taken some creative liberties with the names, such as Horned Nest of Goodness (standard American breakfast), or the Snowbowl Fiesta Plate (named for the ski resort nearby).

Not Just a Restaurant – Whooo Knew?

Aside from the great food and dog-friendly patio, one of my favorite things about the Toasted Owl is that everything is for sale. Everything! Do you like that quirky picture, retro chandelier or the table and chairs your sitting on? Just ask the price and it can be yours. This makes it fun for us repeat guests, since every visit there seems to be some things new, replacing items that have found other loving homes.

This past weekend we headed to the Grand Canyon to hike to Phantom Ranch for a night. Passing through Flagstaff, we again, of course, stopped at the Toasted Owl Café. There are many other great places to try in Flagstaff, but the Owl keeps calling us back.

The downtown location of the Toasted Owl Cafe is located at 12 S Mikes Pike St., and is open seven days a week, from 8am to 3pm. The eastside location is open Wednesday through Sunday, from 8am to 2pm.

Mother Road Brewing Company is located directly across the street from the downtown location and is a great place to grab a beer after lunch at Toasted Owl. In addition to good beer, I love their slogan, ‘finding joy in the adventure’. That alone is enough reason to pay a visit.
