Mmmm… Momos at the Market

Taste something new at the Ferry Building Farmers Market in San Francisco

Perhaps nothing is more understatedly iconic San Francisco than exiting the BART onto street level at the Embarcadero station, on a Saturday morning, steps away from the Ferry Building Farmers Market… exactly where we decided to begin our long weekend away in the City by the Bay.

With the first step onto Market Street, I’m reminded why I love this city.  There’s a chill in the dewy air.  The street is alive with all types of traffic, from cars to trolley cars, bicyclists and pedestrians clutching their morning coffee. Looking past tents of artists and the street car plaza is the pointy clock tower of the Ferry Building.  This will be our first stop.

If you have never been to the Saturday Farmer’s Market at the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero, it’s a must-do on your next trip to San Francisco!  The array of the fresh produce is reason enough to go, but this market doesn’t stop there. Fresh bread, flowers, olive oils, jams, coffees, teas, cheeses… if it’s fresh and local, you can find it.

I discovered momos

Just along the side of the Ferry Building are the food vendors. Close your eyes and follow your nose! Looking at the selection of sandwiches, tamales, Korean fare, Indian food, and more, I really couldn’t decide what to try first.  I’m on my second lap past the various vendors when a display of small dumplings catches my eye. I’ve discovered momos.

Momos, I’ve come to learn, are small Nepalese dumplings stuffed with a variety of fillings and ground spices. I choose the vegetable momos, which are served with a spicy tomato-cilantro sauce called Golveda Ko Achar.  The sauce is so good I could drink it!  The dumplings come eight to an order, which is plenty to share, (even though I don’t). The texture is perfect and the amount of flavor in each dumpling is impressive. I begin to wonder why I haven’t yet been to Nepal. Bini’s Kitchen, and their signature momos, are relatively new to the Ferry Plaza Market, but I sure hope they stay around for a long time!
